Book Club #1 - Gun Machine

In this episode we talk about Gun Machine by Warren Ellis.

Next month we’re going to review Redshirts by John Scalzi, on April 6th.  You can get the audiobook of either Gun Machine or Redshirts for free if you sign up for a trial subscription at Audible by using this link here: www.audibletrial.com/JitteryRobot

As you can see, we’re trying to come up with a proper format for these book club episodes.  We’ll be meeting weekly between now and the next episode, so hopefully we’ll have something with a little more structure then.

Also, don’t forget to join our page on Goodreads!  We’re looking at getting some audience participation in future episodes, and Goodreads looks like it might be the way to go to make that happen.

With that in mind, we’ll see you next month!

March Book: Redshirts by John Scalzi

For the month of March we’ve decided that John Scalzi’s book Redshirts will be our project of the month.

What is it about?  Good question, here’s what the write up says:

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, and Andrew is thrilled all the more to be assigned to the ship’s Xenobiology laboratory.
Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the fact that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces, (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations, and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.
Not surprisingly, a great deal of energy below decks is expended on avoiding, at all costs, being assigned to an Away Mission. Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

Being Star Trek fans, and huge fans of redshirts in general, this book seems like a no brainer for us to read this month.

If you need a copy, you can find the book in audio, hardcover and e-book format via the following links:

We will be hosting a Google Hangout (Book Club meeting) on April 6th at 7pm.  You can follow us on our Goodreads page for updates on all things Book Club related.

    Goodreads

For the Jittery Robot Book Club, I started a group over on Goodreads.

I figured it would be nice to have a presence on a site that is actually about books and book clubs.  Plus, the features allow us to post what we have upcoming in case you want to read ahead.

If you’re unfamiliar with our book club, every month we pick a book to read (science fiction, fantasy, or anything that has a geeky element to it), and discuss it on Google Hangouts at the end of the month.

Just click the image to the right, sign up and join the group.  If you’d like to discuss the current book before the Google Hangout at the end of the month, we’ll set up a section where you can do so without having to worry about ruining the book for anyone who is not finished yet.

As you can see, Gun Machine by Warren Ellis is our book this month, and starting March 1st we will begin reading Redshirts by John Scalzi, which looks like a hilarious book!
